Review: Emporia ELEGANCEplus seniorentelefoon

What I have now is really suitable for everyone. Except those who like to have a trendy shiny smartphone. This device can even use your grandma very well. Big buttons, big letters and an emergency button. Emporia telecom had me test the ELEGANCEplus senior telephone.

Everyone over 60 likes the idea of big buttons. No fiddling. And in itself it works quite smoothly. You also have to press the buttons really clearly, so that you also get the feeling that you’re doing something. So plus 1 for the Emporia.

Appearance

The Emporia ELEGANCEplus is made of plastic, but with a metal rim where the buttons for receiving and hanging are. On the side are some sliders, for Bluetooth, volume, opening the menu, setting an alarm, and blocking the phone. At the back is the infamous emergency button, which is the unique selling point of this phone. More about that. Furthermore, the ELEGANCEplus has a not very large 1.8 inch color screen.

Functions

Besides just calling, you can of course do much more with this phone. As befits a modern day, you can store 500 contacts, pair via Bluetooth headsets and other equipment, listen to the radio, but also set an alarm clock and have a clock tell you the hour every hour. What strikes me is that the button for the menu is on the side. I don’t think this makes much sense myself. If you read the manual you know that this is the menu button, but it was not very clear to me. I expect such a button somewhere near the red and green buttons. The phone can do a lot, you just have to search.

Nice is that you get explanations (which you can also turn off) with all menu items about what it does, you have to wait for a while. For example, it contains a Calendar (Shows calendar page) and in addition you can set Birthday reminders. You can listen to FM radio and as mentioned earlier you can set and change a top 5 of songs for the emergency button.

I think the phone is quite complete in terms of settings and what you can change.

Interface

For anyone who would like big letters, that is possible. The phone comes standard with a large letter interface. You can also make them a little smaller if you find the large letters annoying, but also larger if you need jumbo size. The contrast is very good, white letters on a black background, so almost everyone should be able to make cheese out of it.

The menu is not very extensive, but I lost the overview relatively quickly. This is also because little fits on the screen, but perhaps also because of the layout. Difficult to put your finger on that. Perhaps it is a matter of much use, as was previously the case with Symbian. Still, the options are quite extensive, in terms of display and sound settings.

Speaking of sound, this phone makes so much noise, including persistent vibrations, that you can hear it even when you are deaf. I have been blankly shocked several times. And it really can’t be very soft. If you are not deaf and have a big house, you will certainly hear it everywhere in the house. If you put it in your pocket, it almost vibrates through it, the Emporia vibrates so hard. And I just think Blackberries were shaking hard.

Emergency button

The Emporia ELEGANCEplus has an emergency button. It is on the back and calls up to 5 emergency numbers when you press it. You can, for example, have your doctor, two children, the neighbor or home care call. If you have not set numbers, 112 will be called automatically if the emergency button is activated. You must enable this via the menu. After pressing the emergency button you have 10 seconds to cancel. A very clear alarm also sounds from the phone to indicate that something is happening. You have to press the button really well, I had a bit of trouble with my long nails, so test in advance how difficult it is to press that button.

Other

It comes with a handy dock , so you can put it in a handy place. Unfortunately I found the battery time a bit disappointing. It should be on standby for 300 hours, but it won’t make it. After 6 days (144 hours), the battery will start beeping that it is time for charging. But on the other hand, if it is always in the dock, you do not have to pay attention to that battery time. Annoying was that the phone beeps when the battery is full. When the phone is in the dock, the battery keeps draining a bit and then recharges. When the battery is full again, you will hear a beep. After a while it drives you crazy. So I turned off the sound, but then you don’t hear the calls.

Conclusion

The Emporia ELEGANCEplus is not quite my thing, but is nevertheless a very good phone. If you do not want a smartphone, and just need a telephone that works, that you can hear well, that is easy to operate , then this is definitely recommended. The emergency button makes it even more suitable for the elderly who need a little extra attention, or perhaps even for children who are often alone at home or on the road. The addition of Bluetooth makes the phone a bit more contemporary because you can connect headsets and other Bluetooth equipment to it. The battery time is unfortunately not so exciting, not in terms of call time and not in standby. So almost only pros for this phone.

The Emporia ELEGANCEplus gets a 9 from me . Purely because it is quite a complete thing in its class.

Pros

  • Large buttons
  • Big letters
  • Hard sound
  • Shaking hard
  • Many options / settings
  • Dock

Negatives

  • Beep when battery is full
  • Emergency button must be pressed hard
  • Menu button unclear

The Emporia ELEGANCEplus is available at T-Mobile and Vodafone, but also works as a separate device with KPN and is available at, among others, Seniorent Telefoonstore.nl and Bol.com
