Review: Libratone Zipp draadloze AirPlay speaker

According to themselves, the first fully wireless AirPlay speaker. The Libratone Zipp is a hip speaker that fits perfectly with the average Apple fan. It is logical that the speaker is exclusively available at Apple Stores and Apple Online.

Appearance

The Libratone Zipp is a bit bigger than I originally thought. Portable implies that the speaker is not that big. But it is neither light nor small. It is a kind of round bar, which happens to look very stylish. You can dress it with 8 colors of Italian wool. The covers fit perfectly around it. The top and bottom are shiny white and there is a leather loop to wear it. Some more lights and a button on top, and that’s it. The button on top is round, with the volume buttons in a circle around it and the Libratone logo (a bird, similar to Twitter) in the middle. If you press the button, the speaker turns on, if you press a little longer, it switches off again.

Setup

So far so good. Zodra je de Zipp aanzet is hij even in setup-mode. In deze modus kun je alles instellen. Dat moest ik lezen in het boekje, want zonder handleiding krijg je dit niet aan de praat. Je ziet dat de speaker in setup-mode is door het witte lampje dat lijkt te ‘ademen’. Om hem werkend te krijgen met je wifi-netwerk moet je eerst de Libratone app downloaden. Maak daarna via wifi verbinding met de Zipp, zodat de app hem herkent. In de app kun je de gegevens van je eigen wifi-netwerk invoeren, en vanaf dat moment kun je weer verbinding maken met je eigen netwerk. De Libratone wordt daarna herkend door apps die AirPlay ondersteunen. Klinkt wat omslachtig, maar het betekent dat je ook verbinding met de speaker kunt maken als je onderweg bent. Onderweg heb je je eigen wifi-verbinding toch niet nodig, dus kun je verbinding maken met de Zipp om al je muziek te luisteren. Libratone noemt dat PlayDirect.

Geluid

Supercool, maar is het geluid ook wat? Verbazingwekkend genoeg wel. Goed, de prijs geeft wel wat weg, 399 euro voor een speaker met drie kleuren wol is best prijzig. Nu is prijs geen garantie voor goede geluidskwaliteit, maar tot nu toe zijn alle dure speakers die ik heb getest best goed. Overduidelijk geen budgetmerk in elk geval. De FullRoom-technologie zorgt ervoor dat je om de hele speaker heen goed geluid hebt, niet slechts aan 1 kant van de speaker. En dat merk je wel. Het geluid klinkt mooi vol, hoge tonen zijn prettig, niet schril of amper te horen, de bas is zeker goed aanwezig en het volume kan kneiterhard. Uiteraard treedt er dan wel wat vervorming op, maar nog steeds minder dan ik had gedacht. Dus die geluidskwaliteit is dik in orde.

Draagbaar?

Het is zonder meer een gave gadget, maar draagbaar is serieus anders. Als ik ga picknicken van de zomer neem ik niet zo’n zware speaker mee. De lus die eraan zit voelt door dat gewicht alsof hij een keer los gaat schieten. Daarnaast: hij gaat maar 4 uur mee als je draadloos luistert, 8 uur als je hem fysiek koppelt met een device. Vind ik niet bijzonder lang, voor zo’n duur apparaat. Dat geld had van mij in batterij gestoken mogen worden. Al was hij dan vast nog zwaarder geworden, van die dilemma’s ;-).

Conclusie

De Libratone Zipp is een prachtige speaker, uniek om te zien, draadloos en in principe draagbaar, het geluid is mooi en vol, ruimtelijk door de speciale FullRoom-technologie, persoonlijk door de gekleurde hoesjes, maar ik zou hem zelf niet kopen. Door het gewicht voelt hij niet zo draagbaar en ik had meer batterijtijd gewild dan de 4 uur die hij nu speelt, zeker voor dit geld. Toch kan ik me voorstellen dat je de Zipp als echte audioliefhebber in huis wilt halen. Je kunt hem in elk geval makkelijk meenemen door je hele huis heen, als je hem dan toch niet meeneemt naar buiten.
