A mouse. You know him. He should be right in front of you right now. More specifically, to the right of your keyboard. That thing. Take a look at it. It is an oval-shaped thing with a light on the bottom, two large buttons on top and a wheel in the middle of it. The Cube should replace that thing.
The Cube is what the word says: a small angular object. Something that doesn’t even look like a mouse. And whether the Cube is a replacement of the mouse in practice, that remains to be seen.
Frankly, before I received the small device, I had very good expectations for the Cube. I like new and challenging designs myself. Certainly those who are also described as ’the future’. When the box (pay attention to the diminutive word) came over me and I quickly opened it, I was shocked. The mouse was a tad smaller than I expected. The block was not much larger than my thumb. How am I supposed to start using that? Actually, that is very simple. USB dongle in, turn on Cube and go. It is no more. User-friendliness that we have come to expect from Logitech. So to work. All day with the Cube.
Block
The beautiful stylish block quickly caught the attention of my colleagues. “What is that?” “Why are you playing with a block?” “That’s my mouse,” was the answer every time. And to be honest it was quite nice to go around at the beginning of the day. Driving with just my fingers felt really good. No more hassle with your whole hand and arm sliding back and forth over your desk. A bit like a touchpad on your laptop. I therefore set the Cube extra sensitive. Small movements had big effects on my screen.
All this worked great for the first two hours of the day. Then my arm started to fall apart. The minimal movement with just your fingers started to feel uncomfortable. My forearm started to ache and I longed for my giant two-headed mouse. A whole day of mice with the Cube I did not succeed. Not a complete replacement for the oval rascal that adorns my desk.
Presentations
But the Cube has more functions. You can also use it well as a presentation clicker. Are you a speaker, or would you like to talk with a Powerpoint, then the Cube is a super device. Small, fine and not noticeable at all. And you can’t miss the big mouse button. Too bad that Logitech was unable to fit a laser pointer.
Another advantage (well …) is that the Cube is really very small. So you can lose it in your backpack during transport. Thanks to the included case, it remains in good condition. Tip: leave the USB dongle in your laptop during transport. There is no special compartment for this in the Cube or in the case.
Conclusion
Although the Cube initially looked like a great mouse, I did a fair bit of testing while testing the cube. For me, the Cube is too small to really use as a mouse replacement. A bit bigger, like a normal travel mouse, feels a lot better for me to use. There is nothing to be said about the presentation function of the Cube. The device is simply perfect for this. The bottom line is that presenting your Powerpoints is very good with the Cube. Making it not so ;-).
Pros:
- Feels good for short use
- Easy to take with you
- Great for presentations
Negatives:
- Too small to work with all day
- Not a replacement for a ‘big’ mouse
- Gets lost in your bag (and the dongle too) quickly
What do you think of such a mouse?
