Review: Mede8er 450X2 mini 500GB

Media players are useful, you connect them to your television and you can watch your own carefully collected media. Over time, most media players are quite extensive. In this review the Mede8er 450X2.

The first media player I had was a Freecom I bought about 6 years ago. A world opened up for me: movies and series I downloaded I could watch on my TV! Okay, it wasn’t HD and the hard drive was full faster than I wanted, but good. So when I bought an HD TV, it was time for a new one: one of the most famous, the Popcorn Hour A110. A large community kept developing software for the device (and the many brothers he has). However, the A110 is starting to show its age. That is why I was now allowed to try the Mede8er 450×2. Launched earlier this year, it’s an unknown name in the world of Popcorn, Western Digital, AC Ryan, not to mention the Apple TV. Can this device compete with the best?

Unpacking

My first impression was a shock. The box is completely packed with specs, possibilities and other marketing. Reminded me a lot of the movie ‘If Microsoft designed the iPod package’ ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EUXnJraKM3k ). Not very positive. Fortunately this changed when I opened the box: nowadays you don’t often see that the HDMI cable is included. In the store you quickly save that 20 euros (by the way: feel free to buy cables for a few euros, they work just as well as the cables of 50 euros). In addition, a standard A / V cable with RCA plugs is put in the box, as is a carrying case (!) To take the Medi8ter with you. I’ve never seen that!

to install

Installation is a breeze: put cables in and turn them on. Adjust all settings for my receiver and ready. Or so I thought. When I went to look at the software version, a very old 1.x version appeared to be installed. The current version has been 2.x for a while. Not neat that a newer version is not included. That is still to be solved, but I was really surprised that you cannot update via the menu: you have to do this by downloading the new firmware on the computer, putting it on a USB stick and then updating it. My Freecom was able to do it directly via the internet and with Popcorn it is a piece of cake. A very missed opportunity.

My version has a 500GB hard drive. A great size for most people: an average HD (1080p) movie will cost you 4-8GB each, which means about 50-100 movies on this hard disk. That’s not enough for me personally, so it’s attached to my NAS. Immediately a good way to test how the media player works over the network.

Use

De menustructuur van de Mede8er is redelijk standaard. Apart punt: op de afstandsbediening moet je op de X drukken om terug te keren naar een hoger niveau. Het lijkt alsof je iets gaat wissen. Er zit een zoekfunctie in voor films, foto’s en muziek, hoewel dit alleen werkt voor de interne harde schijf. Maakt het wel een stuk makkelijker tussen veel films de juiste te vinden. Als je vandaag de dag mee wilt tellen in de mediaspelerwereld, moet er ook iets met internet op zitten. De Mede8er telt zeker mee, je hebt de keuze uit YouTube, Flickr, Picasa, radio, weer en nog veel meer. Er zit zelfs een browser bijgeleverd. Het intypen van adressen is echter niet echt heel handig, daarvoor zou het optionele toetsenbord een goede uitkomst zijn. Met de afstandsbediening is het toch behelpen. Ook is de browser allesbehalve snel.

Testen

De meest bekende test om een mediaspeler te testen, is de beroemde documentaire van de BBC getiteld ‘Planet Earth’. Voor de BBC een showcase voor 1080p-HD-materiaal, voor mij een goede manier om te kijken hoe de Mede8er omgaat met HD. Bij mij niet goed. Ja, hij speelt hem af, maar helaas met veel artefacten. De oude Popcorn doet dat beter. Volgens een aantal fora komt dit door mijn versie, die schijnt in combinatie met de onboard-chip problemen te geven.

All Stars 2 dan. Het is een HD-versie van 8GB, dan zou je zeggen dat de processor kan laten zien wat hij kan en kan meteen het streamen vanaf een NAS getest worden. Dit draait als een zonnetje, geen enkele artefact, beeld en geluid loopt prima synchroon. Inmiddels heb ik de test uitgevoerd met verschillende films, van 1080p tot Tom en Jerry in 476p: alles draait als een zonnetje. Het probleem met Planet Earth lijkt éénmalig te zijn geweest.

Ook internetradio doet het perfect, mijn favoriete station is direct gevonden. Wat ik nog steeds jammer vind, is dat er eigenlijk geen enkele mediaspeler is met een klein display. Voor internetradio zou dat handig zijn: dan hoef je de tv niet aan te zetten om van kanaal te wisselen. Waarschijnlijk is daar een veel te kleine markt voor.

Conclusie

The Mede8er 450×2 does what it is made for: playing media. Without major problems and very user-friendly. Less points are the slow internet applications and the old firmware that comes standard. I was very positively surprised by the contents of the packaging: you can start immediately without having to connect different cables. The remote control also feels good, the keys are arranged in such a way that you quickly know your way blindly. If you are looking for a good quality media player for a reasonable price, it should not be missing from your list of options.
