Imagine you are tired of using external hard drives. Suppose you just want to centrally store files for the whole family somewhere and don’t have to leave a PC on day and night. Suppose you also want to be able to access other locations. Then you buy a NAS. I tested one from Synology, the DS212J.
Synology is known for manufacturing easy-to-use Network Attached Storages. Even if you do not have a lot of knowledge about network equipment, you can use it. And if you do, you can use it pretty much. Suitable for all ages, so to speak. A type that is particularly suitable as an entry-level model is the DiskStation 212J that I tested.
Appearance
On the outside it is a container of plastic. Glimmed white, with a whole circus of lights. A blue light for the on / off status and for the other status lights nice and yellow and flashing.
Four black legs to plant it stably in a place where you don’t have to look at it too often and you’re done. On the back is the ventilation outlet and on the sides, the device draws in air through the gridded Synology logo.
Opening is a matter of flattening and sliding a bit. Took me a bit of effort to figure out, because it is not very logical, but good. We will call it child-safe.
Setup
Inserting the hard disks (maximum 2x 4TB) is not very difficult. You slide them into the step and screw them on. Close the box, switch it on, and then switch devices. Because you install via the PC or laptop. A CD-ROM with software for the Synology Assistant is included. When Synology Assistant is installed, the software searches for Disk Stations on the network. The DS212J was quickly found and then the fun started.
The installation of the Disk Manager (the software of the NAS itself) was a breeze. You can also choose a special type of Synology RAID setup or configure the RAID yourself. I have only limited myself to the standard options for Synology RAID. Which also came down to RAID-0. And I understand that this is very technical talk, and that is why I say: if you just follow the standard options, there is nothing wrong and everything is installed tip-top.
With the Synology Assistant you can always quickly check the status of your NAS and upload photos directly to a folder on your NAS. You can also configure printers that you hang on the NAS with USB so that your printer suddenly hangs up in your network and you can also print remotely with the correct settings (which is a bit advanced).
DiskStation Manager and apps
Na installatie kom je via het ip-adres dat de NAS heeft gekregen van je router in het systeem, via je browser. DiskStation Manager, de software van de NAS, ziet eruit alsof je in een echte desktop bezig bent. Het is overzichtelijk, met een soort startscherm en er staan wat snelkoppelingen op. Van daaruit kun je allerlei dingen instellen en programma’s openen.
Er zijn zelfs antivirusprogramma’s, dus als je veel documenten en andere bestanden direct op je NAS opslaat controleert dit programma al deze bestanden voor je. Ook als je dus later die bestanden weer naar je pc of laptop kopieert, zijn ze veilig en wordt je pc niet besmet. Een overzicht van pakketten die Synology biedt vind je in het Package Center. Je kunt dit ook uitbreiden met externe bronnen, maar ook dat is weer een beetje voor gevorderden en daar ga ik nu even niet op in.
Wat ook wel leuk is, is dat Synology apps heeft gebouwd voor Android en iOS om bestanden en foto’s mee te benaderen en op te slaan op je NAS, en een app om informatie over je NAS op te vragen, zoals welk ip-adres in je netwerk je NAS heeft. Daarmee kun je hem dus altijd vinden, ook als je een DHCP aan hebt staan met dynamische adressen.
Prestaties
Hoewel ik niet ga lopen benchmarken op heel diep niveau, kan ik wel wat zeggen over de prestaties. Waar je de DS212J wel en niet voor moet gebruiken. Zoals ik eerder al zei: het is een instapmodel, geschikt voor thuisgebruik. Er zit niet overdreven veel RAM-geheugen in, 256MB, en er zit een Intel Atom-processor in. Niet helemaal equivalent met een netbook omdat je de hele Windows-interface mist, maar toch, het is geen overdreven zware hardware. Maar, het is prima geschikt voor normaal bestanden delen. Dus als je de NAS wilt gebruiken als centraal opslagsysteem voor meerdere gebruikers in je netwerk, en er eventueel printers aan wilt hangen, dan is deze NAS uitstekend. Dan betaal je gewoon een prima bedrag voor de functies die het heeft. Wil je echter veel downloaden via programma’s als Sabnzbd of Sickbeard en veel films streamen, dan wordt het lastiger. Je merkt dan dat alles niet te soepeltjes gaat en de netwerkkaart trekt niet alles uit je supersnelle internetverbinding.
Wil je echt meer met je NAS, dan zou ik eens kijken voor een DS213+ of een DS713+. Overigens beide ook nog steeds met twee harde schijven, maar wel met veel ruigere hardware.
Positief is dat je de NAS haast niet hoort. Hij is bovendien ook nog vrij zuinig, met 17.6W in actief gebruik, ongeveer. Ik heb het niet getest met een meter erbij, maar ik geloof ze maar even op hun woord.
Er is echt oneindig veel te vertellen over wat een NAS van Synology allemaal kan. Belangrijkste punt is: alles wat je erop zet, wordt draadloos beschikbaar gemaakt, of het nu naar iTunes moet of naar je TV. Klinkt wat voor de hand liggend en maar al te positief, maar ik vind het dan ook echt een prettig overzichtelijk systeem.
Conclusie
The DS212J is a glossy white device with flashing lights. Not mother’s prettiest, but we assume that you do not put the device in the middle of your living room, like me. The performance is fine for basic use, but if you really want to download and stream a lot via all kinds of added programs, I would not go for this model. The interface is very user-friendly, just like the setup and installation. If you are a beginner with a little sense of technique then you should be able to handle this.
The Synology DS212J is available for a suggested retail price of 175 euros, without hard drives! You still have to buy it.
Ik heb een in alle opzichten vergelijkbaar apparaat van QNAP, de grootste concurrent. Ik vergeleek dus even snel, en toen viel die "draadloos" optie meteen op. QNAP heeft die niet, en deze waarschijnlijk ook alleen als optie. Je spreekt over een Intel-Atom processor, maar ik denk dat dat niet klopt. Volgens mij zit er een ARM processor in, een Marvell of zo. Die zijn half zo snel als Atoms en ze hebben ook maar 1 core. Ze zitten vaak in telefoons en mediacenters, o.a. omdat ze zo energiezuinig zijn en geen drol kosten.
Ik ken de J niet. Ik heb de 212+ en van wat ik lees, is hij veel sneller dan een J. Het blijft echter een NAS.
Hij/zij die de NAS intensief wil gaan gebruiken, raad ik aan te kijken naar de performance in een netwerk. Je besteedt er niet heel veel aandacht aan, maar DSM is geweldig. Het aandachtspunt bij deze machines is de leessnelheid en de schrijfsnelheid en soms het aantal taken dat tegelijk wordt afgehandeld. Let dus op de netwerkadapter(s) en het werkgeheugen. RAM is bij deze kleine uitvoering niet uit te breiden.
Nog een leuke (extra) opties van een NAS is hosting van websites. Priv
Het mag wat kosten, kennelijk.
Het apparaat dat anneliesje hier beschrijft is niet geschikt om een website te hosten. De software staat er waarschijnlijk wel op, of is te installeren, maar hij is er echt veeeeel te traag voor.
Zelf je website hosten kan ( dat doet OBA ook ), maar houd er rekening mee dat je uploadsnelheid bij ADSL maar 1 Mbit/seconde is. OBA gebruikt daarom een proxyserver, en dat betekent dat het ip-adres dat van de proxyserver is, niet van jezelf.
Ik heb net even opgezocht wat er waar is van die "ip adress penalty".
